Voltaire Lab is a project by Urtzi Urkixo, a basque graphic artist based in Berlin since 2015. At the young age of 19, he started learning how to produce his own t-shirts in a local squatted warehouse ́s silk screen printing workshop. After graduating in Fine Arts he started his editorial and printmaking project which focuses on printmaking.
In his own words, “printmaking is the end of the creation process. Some creators don ́t choose proper materials for ending correctly their designs and ideas. I like being in that last step, helping those artists and designers creating a properly finished product”.
His work is focused on photography, often appealing to a halftone or bitmap effect in his designs. Urbanism and architecture are principal topics in his artwork since he believes humans are those who give meaning to the building.
Besides dancing and party venues, clubs are for him as important parts of cultural and social infrastructure as for the rest of Berlin society. For the artist, Griessmuehle was a really important place where he could meet lots of different people, some of them are still friends. Following this idea, he developed a project in collaboration with Revier Suedost to bring the observers to the old venue of Griessmuehle and commemorate the space with a hand-printed limited edition poster.
